Seniors
Congressman Paul has been named a “Champion of Seniors” by the 60 Plus Association for his ongoing efforts in proposing and supporting “senior friendly” legislation in Congress. 60 Plus Association President Jim Martin says, “Senior citizens have no finer friend in Congress than Representative Ron Paul.”
Congressman Ron Paul is the author of the Senior Citizen’s Improved Quality of Life Act. This is a comprehensive piece of legislation that would repeal all taxes on Social Security benefits, and make it illegal for the Social Security Trust Fund to be used for any other purpose besides paying Social Security benefits to U.S. citizens.
The Senior Citizen’s Improved Quality of Life Act would offer seniors a significant tax credit for prescription drug purchases, as well as reducing the costs of such drugs by allowing for reimportation of these drugs.
Health Care
Dr. Ron Paul studied at the Duke University School of Medicine, before proudly serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. After his tour of duty, he moved to Texas in 1968, where he began his medical practice in Brazoria County. As a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. Paul has delivered more than 4,000 babies!
Congressman Ron Paul has authored several pieces of legislation to address health care costs and make affordable health care available to more working families. These bills include provisions to:
- Increase the amount and number of tax credits for the health insurance costs of taxpayers and their dependents.
- Waive the employee portion of Social Security taxes for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer or a terminal disease.
Additionally, Dr. Paul has worked closely with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and supported funding opportunities for many of the programs at UTMB.
Dr. Paul supports the advances being made in cutting edge medical research, and has authored the “Cures Can Be Found Act” - legislation allowing tax credits for donations to certain medical research facilities.
Hurricane Relief
Following Hurricane Rita in 2005, Congressman Paul introduced the “Evacuees Tax Relief Act” to address the out-of-pocket expenses incurred and income lost by people who were forced to flee their homes and property. This legislation included a retroactive tax credit or tax deduction of $5,000 to offset evacuation costs, and applied to both income and payroll taxes.
Congressman Paul has played an instrumental role in securing the full and promised level of reimbursement from FEMA for the expenses incurred by local governments for Texas communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. As a result, Texas communities will receive the promised rate of 90% reimbursement for the millions of dollars that were spent to feed, shelter, and provide schools for the refugees of these natural disasters.
Most recently, Congressman Paul voted for HR 889, to reauthorize full funding for the U.S. Coast Guard, as they perform a crucial function in defending our waters and protecting our country in times of disaster.
Protecting Children
Congressman Ron Paul voted this year for the Deleting Online Predators Act, HR 5319. This legislation requires schools and libraries that receive federal funds to take steps to ensure children cannot view pornography or obscene materials on computers at the schools or libraries. Schools and libraries must also restrict access to "online social network" sites such as my space since these sites are often used by sexual predators.
Congressman Paul is also a cosponsor of HR 4221, the No Parole for Sex Offenders Act, introduced by Mark Kennedy of Minnesota. This legislation reduces federal funds to states which make sexually violent predators or those who have been convicted of a sexual offense against a minor eligible for parole. HR 4221 has 25 cosponsors and has been assigned to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security of the Committee on the Judiciary.
Other Important Legislation
An amendment to the 2007 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibits any federal funding for implementing the expensive and unnecessary National Animal Identification System - an intrusive monitoring system that amounts to little more than a tax on livestock owners.
The “Tax Relief Extension Reconciliation Act” - averting tax hikes on capital gains and dividends, exempting ordinary taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax, and protecting small business owners.
Introduced the “Affordable Gas Price Act of 2005”, a multi-faceted piece of legislation designed to reduce gas prices by providing tax incentives for investment in oil refineries, as well as terminating restrictions on oil and natural gas development on federal lands.
Voted for the “Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act”, requiring President Bush to designate new suitable sites for oil refineries and streamlining the regulations and red tape for approving applications for these new refineries.
